Laan Series, 2023
Laan Series draws inspiration from the intricate repair work on old Chinese stools commonly found in Chinese Thai households. Back when industry and mass production were not as advanced as today, repairing was a popular technique to prolong furniture life. To ensure longevity, handymen used two screws and flat steel bars to reinforce the stools, prioritizing function over aesthetics. The result was a unique patchwork of quirky repair patterns. The designer behind the Laan Series seeks to showcase these hidden details by bringing them from under the stool to the tabletop, using contemporary materials that will stand the test of time. The goal is for the vase to be passed down from generation to generation, preserving the legacy of these beautiful, historic stools.
The first edition, made of Maple wood, is designed to be a part of an exhibition at Lou Hieb Seng during Bangkok Design Week 2023.
